Field Service Technician – Packaging Equipment

Location: Remote (Phoenix, AZ metro area) | Schedule: Full-time, hourly, non-exempt, with extensive travel | Compensation: $30 - $37 per hour
Overview
A manufacturer of packaging and automation equipment is seeking a Field Service Technician to support its customer base from the Phoenix, AZ area. This remote, travel-based role is responsible for installing, servicing, and maintaining equipment at customer sites, ensuring systems run smoothly from startup through ongoing operation. The position plays a key part in customer satisfaction by combining hands-on technical troubleshooting with training and support.
What you'll do
- Conduct pre-consultations with customers, confirm site readiness, and monitor equipment startup
- Join planning calls with sales, project management, and customers ahead of installations
- Coordinate equipment and system installs, verifying proper function once complete
- Calibrate HMIs, meters, timers, and temperature seal settings per manufacturer specifications
- Train customer operators and maintenance staff using established training outlines
- Carry out routine preventative maintenance on installed equipment
- Deliver phone-based and on-site troubleshooting and support to customers
- Diagnose causes of operating errors and implement corrective action
- Inspect systems and advise customers on reducing downtime and interruptions
- Document completed service work and recommend next steps to keep systems performing
- Stay current on product functions and applications
- Follow all safety protocols and maintain tools and supplies properly
- Help manage parts and service tool inventory
- Take on additional duties as needed, including mentoring fellow service associates
- Support the sales team by assisting with job quotes
- Help create short instructional videos and machinery documentation for customer use
Required qualifications
- High school Diploma or GED
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, schematics, and procedure manuals
- Ability to review and understand mechanical and electrical drawing packages
- Ability to read wiring diagrams to trace circuits and confirm proper operation per manufacturer specifications
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical, controls, and instrumentation issues at a fabrication shop or customer site
- Ability to replace worn or defective parts such as switches, pumps, motors, bearings, transmissions, belts, gears, control boards, and wiring
- Ability to remain composed when working with customers, team members, and contractors
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Excel, Word, and Power Point
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Valid Driver's License and a valid passport or the ability to secure one
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively, including on short notice when urgent customer support is needed
- Availability for on-call rotation during November and December peak season, covering 12 hours per day, 7 days a week as shared among the team
- Ability to occasionally stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, talk, hear, and use fingers and hands to operate tools or controls
- Ability to sit for extended periods while traveling by plane or car
- Manual dexterity to operate required equipment and tools
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Preferred qualifications
- Associates' degree in a technical field, or equivalent, plus 3-5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Compensation and benefits
- Pay range of $30 - $37 per hour
