Location: Austin, TX (float role covering the surrounding area) | Schedule: Contract, full-time, on-site; M-F 8am to 5 pm, with possible need for availability during other daytime hours

Overview

A healthcare services organization is seeking a Phlebotomist to support laboratory and specimen collection operations across multiple locations in the Austin, TX area. This is a contract position lasting approximately 3 months with the potential to convert to a permanent role, and it plays a key part in ensuring accurate, timely, and properly handled specimen collection for patient care.

What you'll do

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance and decontamination data
• Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
• Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
• Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
• Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures in appropriate containers/tubes
• Follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
• Float between multiple locations in the Austin, TX area as assigned

Required qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
• Minimum 1 year of experience
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• High School Diploma or GED
• Clean driving record
• Reliable transportation
