Overview
A self-performing underground utility contractor is seeking a Project Engineer to support delivery of wet utility and utility plant construction projects valued up to $10 million. This hands-on role blends field coordination, technical problem-solving, and client collaboration to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.
What you'll do
- Support the Project Manager with planning, scheduling, and executing daily project activities
- Coordinate field operations including pipeline installation, shoring, traffic control, and trench restoration
- Manage RFIs, change orders, permitting, utility notifications, and daily reports
- Oversee subcontractors, material orders, and time-and-materials tracking
- Review and interpret project plans, drawings, and specifications
- Maintain compliance with safety standards and company procedures
- Prepare project documentation and correspondence using professional, grammatically correct language
- Assist in maintaining strong client relationships and project profitability
Required qualifications
- 2–4 years of field experience with a self-performing contractor specializing in underground wet utilities
- Strong working knowledge of pipeline installation methods, waterworks materials and systems, and traffic control, shoring systems, and trench restoration
- Proficiency in project documentation, scheduling, change management, and cost tracking
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with domestic water systems preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred; equivalent field experience in underground construction may be substituted in lieu of degree
- Preferred experience in CPM Scheduling (Primavera SureTrak, P3, or P6)
- Preferred experience with Bluebeam (PDF markup & management)
- Preferred experience with InEight Hard Dollar Estimating
- Preferred experience with Microsoft Visio or AutoCAD
- Preferred experience with RapidPlan or similar traffic control design software
