Overview
A healthcare services provider is seeking a Phlebotomist to join its laboratory team on a contract basis, with potential for permanent placement. This role is critical to ensuring accurate specimen collection and processing that supports patient care and diagnostic testing.
What you'll do
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and complete decontamination procedures
- Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures
- Explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and courteously to patients
- Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
- Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
- Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures using appropriate containers/tubes
- Follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
- Attend annual department trainings
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
Required qualifications
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
- Minimum of 1 year of experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- High School Diploma or GED
Compensation and benefits
- Pay rate of $17.40 per hour
