Overview
An established manufacturer specializing in precision machining is seeking a skilled CNC 5-Axis Machinist to set up and operate vertical and horizontal 5-Axis machining centers. This role is critical to producing high-precision metal components—including castings, weldments, forgings, plates, blocks, and tubing—through surfacing, profiling, boring, facing, and threading operations.
What you'll do
- Plan machining operations by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, orthographic drawings, reference planes, surface locations, and machining parameters, including interpreting GD&T
- Program 5-Axis CNC machines using Mastercam
- Perform machine set-ups including tool offsets and compensation, calculating tooling requirements using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry, proving part programs, 3-point alignment of workpieces with stock models and tooling balls, and hanging large workpieces on horizontal machining centers
- Verify set-ups by measuring head clearance, machine travel and positions, and inspecting first-run and sample workpieces to international standards
- Maintain specifications by observing machining operations, taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, troubleshooting, conducting root-cause analysis, adjusting and programming controls, replacing worn tools, and following quality assurance procedures
- Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations
- Maintain equipment through preventive maintenance, following manufacturer instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and requesting repairs (Total Productive Maintenance)
- Maintain continuity across shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and non-conformities
- Interface with Engineering, Programming, Materials, and Quality teams as needed
- Document actions by completing production and quality logs in the company's ERP system (Plex)
- Update job knowledge through ongoing educational opportunities
- Take ownership of new and different requests, seeking opportunities to add value
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent, and at least 5 years CNC Machining experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 2 years of Mastercam experience
- Minimum 5 years of machining experience across multiple 5-Axis machining applications (Zimmermann, Apec, FPT, Mecof)
- General knowledge of QMS (ISO9001/AS9100)
- General knowledge of 5S practices
- General knowledge of basic fixturing
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, and to draw and interpret bar graphs
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Strong conceptual, functional, and technical skills, along with process improvement, verbal communication, controls and instrumentation, supply management, tooling, time management, coordination, inventory control, attention to detail, and judgment
- Must meet company standards for background check, employment verification, reference checks, and controlled substance testing
- Knowledge of AS9100 and IS14001
- Punctuality, attendance, and cooperative working style; ability to accept constructive criticism
- Ability to follow safety procedures, security protocols, and wear proper PPE
- Ability to occasionally stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with Heidenhain and Fidia controls
- Crane experience
- Knowledge of Environmental Management systems
