Overview
A regional CPA firm serving public-sector clients in the San Francisco area is seeking an Audit Director with deep expertise in state and local government auditing. This is a growth-track position offering a path to Partnership, and the Director will serve as the key connector between firm Partners, clients, and engagement staff while helping guide the firm's governmental audit practice.
What you'll do
- Stay closely connected with clients year-round, developing a thorough understanding of their operations and control systems to build lasting relationships
- Either serve as engagement partner or report to one, following firm policy on engagement oversight
- Sign attest opinions on behalf of the firm when serving in the engagement partner capacity
- Oversee all phases of engagements when reporting to a partner, confirming deliverables meet the relevant accounting framework and firm standards
- Flag significant developments and potential issues to the engagement Partner and work through solutions after consultation
- Coordinate proper scheduling across engagements
- Act as the firm's subject matter expert for the governmental sector
- Confirm billing and collection activities are carried out per firm policy
- Supervise and train engagement staff, reviewing work papers and reports in line with firm policy
- Contribute meaningfully to staff performance reviews and ongoing counseling
- Participate in recruiting efforts, including interviewing Assurance and Advisory candidates as needed
- Represent the firm in business development efforts, cultivating referral sources and new business contacts
- Lead outreach on prospective client opportunities, including initial contact, fee estimates, and meetings
- Maintain compliance with all firm-wide policies and procedures
Required qualifications
- Approximately 10 years of public accounting experience, including at least 2 years as a senior manager, with substantial experience auditing state and local governments (cities, counties, special districts, charter schools, etc.)
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field
- Current, valid CPA license
- Willingness and ability to travel to client sites and firm office locations
- Proven track record of generating new business for a CPA firm
- Substantial experience performing audits under GAGAS (Yellow Book), GAAS, and the Uniform Guidance
- Commitment to maintaining compliance with all firm-wide policies and procedures
- Capability to direct, review, and train departmental staff
- Exposure to auditing not-for-profit organizations
