Overview

A healthcare services organization operating multiple patient service locations in the Albany, NY region is seeking a Phlebotomist to join its lab team. This is a contract opportunity with potential for permanent placement, supporting specimen collection operations across several nearby sites.

What you'll do

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) as required
  • Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
  • Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
  • Package specimens for transport
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
  • Attend annual department trainings
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
  • Travel between multiple assigned sites as a float position, potentially working an 8-hour shift anytime between 630am-530pm, with a 5-hour shift on alternating Saturdays (every 2 weeks) from 7am-1pm

Required qualifications

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Clean driving record
  • Reliable transportation
