Location: Richmond, VA Area | Schedule: Full-time, on-site | Compensation: $110,000–$145,000

Overview

An established, family-owned heavy civil and highway construction firm with decades of experience building infrastructure across Virginia and North Carolina is seeking an Assistant Project Manager for its growing Richmond-area backlog. The company self-performs heavy civil, heavy highway, site development, and utility work for federal, state, municipal, and private clients, and is looking to develop project managers from within rather than bring in outside hires. This role offers real, hands-on responsibility from day one, working alongside a Senior Project Manager on active projects with a clear path toward running your own projects.

What you'll do

• Drive submittals, RFIs, and procurement schedules so field crews stay ahead of the work
• Coordinate subcontractors and supplier purchase orders to protect schedule commitments
• Track quantities, production, and costs against budget, flagging variances early
• Support monthly payment requisitions, cost projections, and project documentation
• Participate in weekly project team meetings covering schedule and cost review
• Support a strong, consistently applied safety culture at every level of the project

Required qualifications

• 2–5 years of experience on heavy civil, highway, or utility projects (as a field engineer, project engineer, or current APM)
• Working knowledge of construction scheduling and cost tracking
• B.S. in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, and/or equivalent field experience
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record; travel is primarily local
• Based in or willing to relocate to the Richmond, VA area (relocation assistance available for the right candidate)

Preferred qualifications

• Exposure to HeavyJob, Bluebeam, or P6 is a plus

Compensation and benefits

• Base salary $110,000–$145,000, depending on skills and experience
