Overview

A well-established and highly profitable regional CPA firm is seeking a Tax Director to join its growing team. This role offers exposure to both SEC and closely held clients across diverse industries, with a clear path toward Partnership for the right candidate.

What you'll do

  • Perform technical tax review and approval of all tax returns and governmental tax examinations of any complexity
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in a particular discipline or industry
  • Manage client service responsibilities and ensure assignments are completed within budgeted time
  • Assume full responsibility for larger tax returns and delegate work to tax preparers as needed
  • Participate actively in client meetings and tax planning efforts, supporting the A&A Department with larger clients
  • Serve as a resource for tax preparers, specialists, and A&A staff on tax issues and questions
  • Assume client service responsibility for clients handled by Tax Managers or delegated by Partners
  • Communicate important tax developments affecting firm clients to appropriate personnel
  • Delegate and manage governmental tax examinations; may represent clients before taxing authorities
  • Maintain familiarity with the qualifications of all tax staff and review staff assignments for appropriateness
  • Develop trained staff through recruiting, performance evaluations, training aid development, and instruction in professional development programs
  • Ensure accurate and timely billing and collection processes
  • Maintain complete knowledge of the firm's philosophy and positions on tax matters
  • Stay informed on general economic and political trends and potential legislation affecting the business climate
  • Participate in firm practice development through referral sources, community, and industry activities
  • Responsible for development, coaching, and training of seniors, semi-seniors, and staff accountants
  • Participate in reviews and evaluations of the tax department
  • Travel occasionally for work at client offices, meetings, and seminars
  • Work occasional overtime throughout the year, with heavy overtime (potentially exceeding 55 hours per week) required from January 1 to April 15

Required qualifications

  • Seven to ten years experience in public accounting, with demonstrated progression in tax complexity, scope, and research
  • At least two (2) years experience representing clients before taxing authorities
  • Minimum one (1) year experience supervising and directing the work of tax preparers
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required
  • Minimum of forty hours of continuing education required each year to maintain and develop technical and business skills
  • Current and valid certified public accountant’s license required
  • Must be a member in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs

Preferred qualifications

  • Master’s degree in taxation preferred
