Sustaining Engineer – HVAC Products

Overview
An established manufacturer of HVAC products is seeking a Sustaining Engineer to support existing product lines throughout their lifecycle. This role ensures ongoing performance, quality, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance while providing critical engineering support to factory operations and driving continuous improvement.
What you'll do
- Provide daily engineering support to production and factory operations, resolving technical issues as they arise
- Manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), Bill of Materials (BOM) updates, and supplier qualification testing
- Develop and validate minor design modifications to improve manufacturability or quality
- Participate in cost-reduction and process improvement initiatives
- Coordinate with supply chain to qualify alternate suppliers and materials
- Apply structured problem-solving tools (FMEA, RCA, 8D, etc.) to resolve technical challenges
- Interface with suppliers and factory leadership to address technical issues
- Maintain engineering documentation and compliance records
- Mentor and guide junior engineers or interns, managing small sustaining projects independently
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
- 2–5 years of experience in sustaining engineering, manufacturing engineering, or HVAC product engineering
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
- Proficiency in CAD tools such as SolidWorks or Creo, and PLM systems such as Teamcenter or Windchill
- Experience with ECNs, BOM management, and supplier qualification
- Knowledge of HVAC industry standards including ASHRAE, UL, AHRI, and DOE
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods while observing or troubleshooting equipment
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs during prototype handling or lab testing
- Willingness to spend time on the shop floor and occasionally travel for supplier visits or vendor qualification testing
Preferred qualifications
- Lean / Six Sigma Green Belt certification a plus
