Overview
A healthcare services provider is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to join its laboratory team on a contract basis. This role is essential to ensuring accurate specimen collection and handling, supporting quality patient care across pediatric and geriatric populations.
What you'll do
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge samples as required
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures
- Update patient information accurately
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
- Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
- Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
- Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
- Package specimens for transport
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place in appropriate containers/tubes, and label accurately, following protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
- Attend annual department training sessions
- Answer telephone calls and relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
- Assist with various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations
Required qualifications
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
- Minimum 2 years of experience
- Pediatric and geriatric experience required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- High School Diploma or GED
