Overview
An established industrial manufacturer is seeking a talented Application Engineer who thrives on solving complex technical problems, working directly with customers, and turning real-world challenges into practical engineered solutions. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, sales, product development, and the customer, serving as the technical expert from initial concept and system design through installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ongoing support. The ideal candidate combines strong electrical/electronics knowledge with curiosity and communication skills that work well across engineers, plant personnel, sales professionals, and business leaders.
What you'll do
- Develop deep expertise in the company's products, technologies, and applications across industrial markets
- Partner with sales professionals to understand customer requirements and recommend the right technical solution
- Translate customer needs into practical, manufacturable system and product solutions
- Configure standard products and systems to meet application-specific requirements
- Design customized solutions incorporating internal products as well as third-party technologies
- Perform engineering calculations and technical analysis to support product selection and recommendations
- Serve as a primary technical point of contact for customers throughout the sales and implementation process
- Clearly communicate product capabilities, system functionality, and technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Create application drawings, technical documentation, specifications, and training materials
- Support system design, testing, verification, installation, programming, commissioning, and startup activities
- Troubleshoot equipment and systems in the field, over the phone, and through electronic support
- Provide technical and product training to customers, sales teams, and other stakeholders
- Test new and existing equipment to verify performance against engineering specifications
- Help evaluate new products and determine their readiness for field deployment
- Provide engineering teams with clear feedback regarding product performance, customer requirements, field issues, and potential improvements
- Participate in the design and development of new products and product enhancements
- Coordinate outside engineering resources when specialized expertise is required
- Accompany sales professionals on customer visits and participate in technical presentations and conference calls
- Support technical responses to RFIs and RFQs
- Identify additional customer needs and opportunities that could lead to future products, applications, or business growth
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- 5+ years of technical field, applications engineering, or similar hands-on engineering experience
- Experience within oil & gas, mining, power generation, heavy industrial, or similar environments
- Familiarity with sensor technologies, industrial monitoring systems, electronics, and network communications
- Working knowledge of industrial communication and control protocols, including Modbus, 4–20mA, relay logic, and other common industrial communication protocols
- Understanding of hazardous locations, classifications, and equipment ratings
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple technical projects and competing priorities
- Ability to translate complex technical information into language customers and non-technical users can understand
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills
- Approximately 10% travel to customer and other business locations, with occasional travel to Canada and Mexico
- Must possess or be able to obtain a valid passport
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when necessary for equipment installation, testing, or field support
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with Allen-Bradley controls
- Ladder logic experience
- HMI systems and interface design
- AutoCAD proficiency
- Industrial gas detection or sensor systems experience
- System commissioning and field startup experience
- Mechanical systems knowledge or strong mechanical aptitude
