Location: Washington, DC | Schedule: Full-time, on-site, Monday–Friday 7:30am–4pm (contract, approximately 3 months with potential for permanent placement) | Compensation: Benefits are available

Overview

A healthcare services organization is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist to support its clinical laboratory operations in Washington, DC. This contract role, with potential to convert to a permanent position, is essential to ensuring accurate specimen collection, handling, and patient care support within a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.

What you'll do

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
• Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
• Fully understand and follow all physicians' orders
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
• Package specimens for transport
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow protocol-specific procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries

Required qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
• Minimum of 5 work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• High School Diploma or GED
• Minimum 1 year of experience
