Overview

A healthcare services employer is seeking a Phlebotomist for a contract role based in Germantown, MD, with potential for permanent placement after an initial 3-month assignment. This position plays a key role in ensuring accurate specimen collection, handling, and patient care support within a clinical laboratory setting.

What you'll do

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
• Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
• Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
• Package specimens for transport and store samples at required temperatures, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
• Attend annual department trainings
• Answer telephone calls and relay laboratory results to satisfy inquiries

Required qualifications

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
• Minimum of 5 work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• High School Diploma or GED
• Minimum 2 years of experience
