Overview
An established manufacturing operation is looking for a skilled Mold Maker to join its Tool Room team. This role is central to the full lifecycle of injection mold tooling—from initial build and assembly through ongoing production support and troubleshooting—working closely with engineering, machining, and production teams to keep tooling performing to spec.
What you'll do
- Construct, assemble, and fit injection molds, including cores, cavities, inserts, slides, and components
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, repairs, and overhauls of molds
- Diagnose and resolve tooling issues affecting production, such as flash, short shots, wear, and dimensional drift
- Interpret complex blueprints, CAD models, and GD&T call-outs with precision
- Perform CNC and manual machining as needed to support tool construction and repairs
- Maintain tight tolerances consistently (±0.0005” or better)
- Conduct spotting, fitting, and bench work to confirm proper mold fit and function
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and design teams on new tool launches and engineering change orders
Required qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of experience in mold making within an injection molding environment
- Strong knowledge of mold construction including cores, cavities, slides, lifters, and ejection systems
- Understanding of plastic flow, gate design, and their impact on part quality
- Proficiency in mold spotting, fitting, assembly, and bench work
- Experience with CNC and/or manual machining to support tool builds and repairs
- CNC Milling experience — 3-axis minimum
- Surface grinding and conventional machining skills
- Familiarity with metrology and inspection tools such as micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and CMM
- Solid understanding of shop math, including trigonometry, geometry, and tolerance stack-up calculations
Preferred qualifications
- Multi-axis CNC milling experience is advantageous
- EDM experience — sinker and/or wire (highly preferred)
- Experience with complex tooling including multi-cavity, hot runner systems, family molds, or tight-tolerance medical/aerospace tools
- Proven troubleshooting skills with the ability to trace issues to root causes
- Systems thinking with an understanding of how components affect overall mold performance
- Craftsmanship and pride in producing high-quality work
Compensation and benefits
- $49,920–$76,960 DOE
