Overview

A well-established and highly profitable regional CPA firm serving the San Jose area is adding a Tax Director to its growing practice. This firm supports a diverse mix of SEC and closely held clients across multiple industries, and the role offers a genuine path toward Partnership for the right leader.

What you'll do

  • Provide technical review and final approval of tax returns and governmental tax examinations of all complexity levels
  • Serve as the go-to subject matter expert for a specific discipline or industry group
  • Oversee client service delivery, ensuring engagements stay within budgeted time
  • Take ownership of the firm's largest tax returns, delegating work to preparers as appropriate
  • Join client meetings and tax planning sessions to support the A&A Department on major accounts
  • Act as a resource to tax preparers, specialists, and A&A staff on technical tax questions
  • Manage client relationships handed off from Tax Managers or delegated by Partners
  • Keep firm personnel informed of relevant tax law changes and developments affecting clients
  • Delegate and manage governmental tax examinations, and represent clients before taxing authorities when needed
  • Track staff qualifications and review assignment appropriateness across the tax team
  • Help build a well-trained staff through recruiting involvement, performance evaluations, training material development, and instruction in professional development programs
  • Ensure billing and collections are handled accurately and on schedule
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the firm's tax philosophy and positions
  • Stay current on broader economic and political trends that could influence tax legislation or the business climate
  • Support practice development through referral source relationships and community or industry involvement
  • Coach, develop, and train senior, semi-senior, and staff accountants
  • Identify training needs across the tax staff based on their qualifications
  • Take part in reviews and evaluations of the tax department
  • Travel occasionally to client offices, meetings, and seminars
  • Work overtime as needed throughout the year, with heavy overtime from January 1 to April 15 that may exceed 55 hours per week

Required qualifications

  • Seven to ten years of public accounting experience with demonstrated progression in tax complexity, scope, and research
  • At least two (2) years of experience representing clients before taxing authorities
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience supervising and directing the work of tax preparers
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting
  • Minimum of forty hours of continuing education annually to maintain and build technical and business skills
  • Current, valid certified public accountant license
  • Member in good standing with the American Institute of CPAs

Preferred qualifications

  • Master's degree in taxation preferred
