Location: Austin, TX (float position across the Austin area) | Schedule: Full-time contract, M-F 8am to 5 pm, with occasional availability needed for other daytime hours
Overview
A healthcare services provider is seeking a skilled Phlebotomist for a contract role with potential for perm placement. This float role supports multiple locations across the Austin, TX area and plays a key part in ensuring accurate, safe, and courteous specimen collection for patient care. The projected duration is 3 months, with potential for perm conversion.
What you'll do
- Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data and decontamination activities
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients
- Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles
- Fully understand and follow physicians' orders
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy
- Package specimens for transport
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, and accurately label and handle them per protocol to maintain specimen integrity during transport
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations
- Attend annual department trainings
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries
- Assist with troubleshooting, training, and workflow recommendations
- Update patient information as needed
Required qualifications
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting
- Minimum of 1 year of experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- High School Diploma or GED
- Clean driving record and reliable transportation
